Nothing more than a dot on the map, Emmaville, MN, Population 4, is a classic little tourist stop that consists of a gas station, cafe, gift shop and motel-and-campground all in one. It’s a place known to the locals and tourists who frequent the area, but remains a hidden gem to most others. Part of the fun of this place are the quirky signs out front and around the building.

Dala Horse, Mora, MN and Cloquet, MN
For those of you just tuning in, this week at Highway Highlights we visit the eastern part of Minnesota to a small town called Mora. Here in Mora, there are two Dala horses; one small and one supersized. The Dalecarlian horse iis a decorative, hand-carved toy for Swedish children back in the days of yore. Now it serves as a symbol of Sweden, much like a nutcracker statuette from Germany. Continue reading
Gold Glove at Target Field, Minneapolis, MN
In the spring of 2010, outdoor baseball returned to Minnesota after 28 years of playing in the Metrodome downtown. And what a return it has been. Target Field, with naming rights purchased by the Target Corporation of course, is a state-of-the-art outdoor baseball venue on the edge of downtown Minneapolis where the MLB team the Minnesota Twins play. But where most fans head there enjoy the ambience of watching America’s pastime outside, I found the decor of the place just as great.
Paul Bunyan’s Gravesite, Kelliher, MN
Kelliher, MN, population 262, sits northeast of Bemidji, MN about 50 miles and a little ways east of the massive Red Lake. A small, unassuming town a little ways off of any main road, it is the final resting place of the beloved folklore hero of the pines, Paul Bunyan.

Ironman Statue, Chisholm, MN
The oft-overlooked and under-appreciated Iron Range in the northern corner of Minnesota is home to a wide array of geologic wonders, scenic lookouts, and roadside attractions. Chisholm, MN, in the heart of the range, boasts one of Minnesota’s biggest and best- the Iron Man. (Cue the Black Sabbath). Continue reading
